Vegetable glycerin is a natural emollient that adds a cooling effect on the skin and has become a predominant ingredient in most skin care products and soaps. It is used in cosmetics and body care products to assist in retaining moisture and is helpful in pulling oxygen into the skin. Vegetable glycerin is also the principal medium for the manufacturing of non-alcohol based herbal extracts, which are called glycerites. To Use in Hand Sanitizer, Follow the WHO Reccommended Formulations found here. Gycerol (Glycerin) is required to be at least 98%, This formulation is 99.7%, which is suitable for use in this formulation.
Other humectants or emollients may be used for skin care, provided that they are affordable, available locally, miscible (mixable) in water and alcohol, non-toxic, and hypoallergenic.
Glycerol has been chosen because it is safe and relatively inexpensive. Lowering the percentage of glycerol may be considered to further reduce stickiness of the handrub.
Glycerol is added as a humectant to increase the acceptability of the product.
Glycerol is just another name for Glycerin depending on the use.
