    Description

This modernist wood sculpture of a mother and child is approximately 4 1/2” tall by about 3 1/2” wide at the base of the sculpture.  There are three irregular holes in a triangular pattern in the base of the sculpture that I’ve been told were were probably the locations of former wire dowels that would have attached a separate base to the sculpture, a base which is now no longer with the sculpture.  There is no signature on the sculpture; perhaps the former base was signed.  However, the sculpture is very much in the style of Chiricahua Apache artist, Allan Houser (1914-1994), and is attributed to him. I’ve attached a photo of a somewhat similar patinated bronze sculpture by Houser for comparative purposes (last photo); it is not part of this sale.  The present sculpture, minus its former base, is in very good condition with only a very slight blemish (< 1/8”) on the top of the sculpture.
Allan Houser or Haozous was a sculptor, painter and book illustrator born in Oklahoma.  He was one of the most renowned Native American painters and Modernist sculptors of the 20th century.
