Description

The Shar Pei is a noble, ancient breed who is immediately recognized by his trademark, "hippo-head", loose wrinkles, and blue-black tongue (of which only two breeds share, the Chow Chow who is remotely related and the Shar Pei).  Originally thought to be from a small village of Tai Li in Kwantung, they are an ancient breed who originated to be an all-around farm-hand, performing duties such as perimeter guard duty, hunting down and eliminating vermin, and herding livestock.  Their natural scowl and black mouth with blue-black tongue were once thought to ward off evil spirits.  As an ancient breed they once guarded royal palaces.  The name Shar Pei means rough, sandy coat, and any solid color is acceptable.  The distinctive coat and its roughness can be a problem with some people who will develop a rash just from touching it, although it was developed to protect the Shar Pei from the boar that it hunted.  Shar Pei are very strong, intelligent, aloof, and at times stubborn.  They require early socialization and training, and an owner who can diffuse the stubborness and natural protectiveness of the Shar Pei. With early socialization and training they can become a devoted and loveable member of the family!
