Description
This classy cowboy style fedora hat was made in the 1950s by Portis. It is a Beaver blend, handcrafted with a Swan’s Down finish. It has a high quality leather sweatband with a backing membrane to stop perspiration from staining the felt. It has a relatively low crown, which is creased in a fedora style diamond crease. It has a three cord ribbon with a fancy bow and a button beneath it.
It has a classy Indiana Jones kind of look. It works as a cowboy hat or a wide brimmed fedora. Very versatile. The color is a light tan - in a brighter light it looks lighter - almost like a soft doe skin color
Size: 7 (I recently discovered the size tag under the lining , thanks to a convo from a vintage hat expert
Here on EBay. I previously had this listed as 6 7/8 as I was trying to determine the size by just measuring)
Crown Height 5-1/4″Ribbon Width: 3/8″ brim is 2 1/2 “
Such a handsome hat! But with age and time - it has a few tiny pinpoint places where the fur has worn a bit. Also it has about a a dime sized green spot on the bottom of the back of the hat near the crease underneath the brim. It shows through a little on the top - but not when you are wearing it and the ribbon does a good job of hiding it. The ribbon itself is faded in places with time A new ribbon - perhaps slightly wider, could totally cover the small stain. Or it may be able to be cleaned and brushed away. I don’t have experience with cleaning these kinds of hats, so I decided it best to leave it as is for now. Just take careful look at photos.
Feel free to convo me for more photos or questions as I am not an expert in hats but happy to answer any inquiries.
Looks great on men or women though originally made for men. A nice vintage “jaunty” look for women is to tie a longer and wider black ribbon around it, with a bow at the back.
It does have a size tag that says “Portis 7” beneath the lining. Happy to send that photo as well if you’d like but wanted to use my 12 allotted photos to show off and reveal all the other details that I thought a buyer would be most interested in.
